Hebrews 4: 6-7

Since therefore it remains open for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, again he sets a certain day- “today”-saying through David much later, in the words already quoted, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” NRSV

‘Make hay while the sun shines’ is a maxim I learnt growing up and has served me well during the times that I have seen fit to obey it. The time to do anything is always now, because that is the time of which we are certain. When we miss an opportunity to do something, there is no guarantee that that chance will come around a second time. Many of us are prone to procrastinate and idle our time away and soon it becomes hard to catch up. Added to that, there is aging, which, if one does not die young, is certain to come and sooner than we think. Back in the day the old folk used to say, ‘I was born just yesterday’. You see, to them it seemed that way but we could never see it. When my older sister used to say, ‘the trouble with youth is that it is wasted on the young’ I could never understand it, but now that I am older I am seeing the truth to the statement. When you are young you are oblivious to everything it seems and you believe that you are invincible. However, as you age you see that nothing is farther than the truth. Our time on earth is limited and so the call to ‘seize the day’ is a real one. Today, accept the call to do the Master’s will. Do not put off. Do not resist.
