Psalm 133:1-3
How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down upon the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down over the collar of his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion. For there the LORD ordained his blessing, life forevermore. NRSV
I am currently reading this book entitled, ‘The Miracle of Magnesium’ and in it the doctor went to great pains to outline the important function of this vital mineral in the body. You would think that given its importance it would have been given greater attention and focus. This very vital mineral is important for the balance and assimilation of calcium in the body and for many regulatory systems yet lesser minerals have been given greater import. The truth of the matter is that we often get things in reverse order. This scripture points to the importance of unity. When there is unity, there is greater joy and peace of mind. We look over our shoulders less. We can enjoy better health as we sleep easier and are plagued with less anxiety. When we are concerned about our fellow humans we are happier. If we recall in the scriptures it was when the apostles became on one accord that the Holy Spirit fell upon them and many miracles were wrought within the body of Christ. Examine the imagery used in this scripture: there is reference made to unity being compared to oil running down Aaron’s beard. The oil represented renewing, the forgiveness of sin and is representative of temple celebrations and a time when the community is on one accord. There is reference to the dew of Mount Hermon and its importance in the agricultural life of the adjoining areas. The snow capped mountains are of unsurpassed beauty. Additionally, Mount Hermon represents the height of heights and most importantly, it is where the LORD ordained his blessing. If we can get to that level we are at our optimal. So brethren, let us strive to live in unity with one another. This day is a perfect day to begin.
