1 Samuel 16: 7
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the LORD does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.” NRSV
With all of our imperfections, God can still use us. God was not looking for someone with physical beauty as a criterion for king. Although the other brothers were tall in stature and were handsome, God’s sights were set on David. The LORD knew that in David, lurked a great leader and king. You see, there is always something that runs deeper than what meets the eye. The story was told of two pots that were used daily by and old Chinese woman to carry water from the stream. One pot had a crack and the other was whole. As the story goes the pot that was whole was happy with its good work but the cracked pot felt badly about its imperfection and that it did not carry the full amount of water. The cracked pot relayed this to the woman who told the pot to observe that on its side of the path flowers were growing. All this while the pot was concerned about its imperfection it was watering the flowers and keeping them alive. So it is with us today. We, with all of our imperfections, are useful to someone and we need not be unduly concerned about our imperfections. All we need to do is to stay connected to God and He will fix us. He is all the perfection we need.
